11AM Doors Open

12PM - 2PM               The Making Of

"Reelin' in the Years"
Sam Pierstorff, Modesto's poet laureate, will kick off the event with a poem.

"Rock Around the Clock"
The Central Valley Doo-Wop Society will open the program with the classic rock song.

"Riding Shotgun"
A nostalgic look back by members of the Faros car club.

"Chopped-Top Merc"
Gene Winfield, a master custom car builder, will talk about his career in the rod and custom car world, as well as his work in film and TV.

"Behind the Curtain"
Candy Clark, Oscar-nominated actress for her role as Debbie Dunham in American Graffiti, will give us a peek behind the scenes during the making of.

"Master of Light"
Haskell Wexler, a documentarian and Academy Award-winning cinematographer of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Bound for Glory, will speak about being the visual consultant for American Graffiti.

2PM – 4PM                VIP Reception/Lobby of the State Theatre

A VIP reception honoring the guest speakers will be held just prior to the Doo-Wop concert. Light refreshments will be served.

The Anderson Gallery will host an exhibit featuring fantastic items from the personal collection of Larry Fredrich, a Wisconsin-based collector who owns over 300 items related to the film American Graffiti. Included in the exhibit is the original, screen-used “On The Air” sign from Wolfman Jack’s studio.

The McHenry Museum will be open for those who would like to visit their permanent American Graffiti display. They will also have a map of events and locations significant to the life of George Lucas and the movie.

4PM – 6PM                Rock ‘N Roll & Doo-Wop Revue

The Central Valley Doo-Wop (and Oldies) Society and the Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau will honor American Graffiti's great soundtrack with a live concert. That unprecedented collection of songs, which were selected to advance the storyline, will be performed by Special Guest Darryl "Cappy" Lewis of The Six Teens ("A Casual Look" 1956), Frankie and The FableTones (featuring Frank Fox who recorded with Vito and the Salutations in the 1960s), The Sensations (a great girl group featuring Shelly Streeter, Penny White, and Debbie Farrell), and Carpediem (the Merced sibling teenagers who rock the oldies!). Also booked is an a cappella harmony group, The Great Imposters, named after one of the songs (by The Fleetwoods) from the movie.

"Goodnight Sweetheart"
The Central Valley Doo-Wop Society will close the program with one of the great doo-wop tunes of all time.

6:30PM                       Featured Guest Speaker

"'Where were you in '62?': American Graffiti, George Lucas and the Baby Boom Generation"
Peter Kramer, a lecturer in Film Studies at University of East Anglia, Great Britain, will speak about the impact of George Lucas's film and its place in American nostalgia.  He is the author of The New Hollywood: From Bonnie and Clyde to Star Wars.

7:00PM                       American Graffiti Film Showing

Throughout the evening, there will be informational tables featuring program participants, as well as event supporters. Participants will include the Central Valley Doo-Wop Society, the Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Graffiti Summer Committee, Modesto Junior College, ModestoView, and many others. There will be information about these individuals and organizations, as well as sales of books and memorabilia.
